A duet of two monologues
Lyrics:
Harbor lights dissolve into the sea with sparks
Marina, water’s calm, the bow in the evening dark
She lived her every night under horizons full of stars
While I’m just learning what it takes to sail this far
I can’t forget that morning bloom
Fluorescent lights in the buzzing room
Door slides wide, and there she stands
The girl who dragged our souls from rocks and death’s sharp fangs
I never found the words to thank her
Shock was locked inside my chest
Thank you… for everything, I stammered
Sentences shattered, syllables a mess
I.T. guys aren’t great with phrases
Especially near girls like her
I rambled, gambled, tripped through statements
She nodded – polite, precise, reserved, secure
She’s the one they write the songs about
The one the men spent their whole lives searching out
The angel of salvation sent by sea at storm
The kind you meet just once, and never hold for long
Above the harbor, evening settles blue
When I’m replaying every foolish thing I chose to do
It’s my own fault they saw the pendant
Should keep it hidden like I always do
Now there’s questions, attention, awkwardness
And that I.T. boy with his yacht-for-Instagram view
Silly rich kids playing sailors
Why did the deck tilt, why did that room capsize?
Why did my practiced footing falter
Under those uncertain eyes?
I’ll drive him to his office, wish him well and wave goodbye
Then come back here beneath this faithful sky
And stay… for crimson sails
They’re out there for sure… aren’t they?
It’s a pity, but my fairy tale is not to share
With one who knows the ocean only through a window pane
From their office open space
My open spaces: blue, and sun, and stormy rains
She fluttered by: a glimpse, and then she’s gone
Why did I feel so trapped when I’ve flown?
That “yes” is like a note from a half-forgotten song
Forty hours, what if crimson sails move on?
What does she hide behind that silver charm?
He’ll never get it, what the pendant holds so warm
And yet I can’t get her out of my mind
This legend was never written for his kind
And yet
And yet
Horizon calls, and full of stars it spreads
Saltwater, wind, while mine was glowing screens
With half-forgotten dreams and soulless machines
High tech and rocket science, ideas running clean
While mine is sails and winches and weather in between
She’s from another world
He’s from another world
In another life, another time
Another place, another stars align
Another me, another you
Another plot and clue
Maybe this would have been another fairy tale for two
